Locksmith questions

Good questions. Clearer decisions.

Fourteen practical answers about doors, keys, permissions and estimates. Find your situation, then call if you need to discuss the details.

Homes & shared entrances

Is the problem at my apartment door or the shared entrance?

Tell us which door you cannot use: the outside building entrance, a vestibule or your individual unit. They may have different locks and authorized keyholders. A landlord or building manager may need to approve access or changes to shared hardware.

What should I check with my landlord or building manager?

Ask who may authorize the work, whether the lock belongs to a shared or master-key system, and whether the property has an existing repair process. A new lock or key arrangement should not be installed without the required permission.

Does moving in mean I need all-new locks?

Not necessarily. Rekeying changes which key operates a suitable existing cylinder. Hardware that is damaged, worn or unsuitable may need repair or replacement. Discuss the condition of each door and the access change you want.

Can old keys stop working while I keep the hardware?

Rekeying can change the working key for suitable cylinders included in the job. Confirm exactly which locks will be rekeyed and how many new keys you need. A lock outside that agreed scope is not automatically changed.

Can several doors use one key?

That can be possible when the cylinders and key systems are compatible. Different brands, keyways or shared-building arrangements may limit the options. List the doors and existing keys so compatibility can be checked.

Why does my lock work with the door open but stick when closed?

The door, latch and frame may not be lining up properly, although worn hardware can also contribute. Mention this symptom during the call. Avoid forcing the key; a new cylinder alone may not solve the fit problem.

Can a keypad fit my existing door?

Fit depends on the product, door thickness, existing holes, surrounding hardware and any property restrictions. Photos help begin the discussion, but compatibility needs checking before installation is promised. Consider battery access and the intended backup entry method, too.

Which photos help explain a repair or installation request?

If you can reach the door safely, take a view of both sides, a close view of the hardware and a view of the door edge and frame. Ask how to send them directly if requested. Do not publicly post key photos, access codes or personal documents.

Vehicles & missing keys

What information is needed for a car lockout?

Provide the make, model and year, the exact parking location, whether the keys are inside and any garage or gate restrictions. Have a way to establish ownership or authorized use. If someone is in immediate danger, contact emergency services first.

What details are needed when every car key is missing?

Say that no working key remains, then provide the make, model, year and start method. Explain whether the car is locked or difficult to reach. The key system, equipment, parts and verification needed must be confirmed for the vehicle.

Planning the work

What should a business keyholder prepare?

Identify the door, describe the problem and establish who can authorize changes. Mention any property-manager requirements or shared key system. If several doors are involved, make a clear list of the work you want to discuss.

What should be included in the estimate?

Ask about the visit charge, labor, expected parts and any relevant additional charges. Confirm the number of doors or keys included and what assumptions the estimate depends on. No fixed rates are listed here because the actual scope must be assessed.

How is availability checked for a nearby town?

Call with the actual address, task and any access restrictions. The area guides help you prepare the request; they do not guarantee technician availability, an office in that town or a particular arrival time.

What if the work needed changes after inspection?

Ask for an explanation of the new finding, the proposed work and the revised estimate before agreeing. A telephone description may not reveal every hardware or door condition. Confirm the final scope rather than assuming extra work is automatically included.
